Dres is a family of eleven uppercase headline styles based on one modular drawing. Vojtěch Říha was inspired by visuals in athletic and football arenas where numbers and names must be readable at distance. Vojtěch developed a simple concept, which allowed him to create eleven styes without being artificial or boring. Each style is made from different combinations of ribbons, stripes and corners. They have a common character set with diacritics, arrows, fractions and alternatives for letters like ‘A’, ‘M’, ‘W’, ‘X’ and ‘Y’. You can also stack them over each other for a multicolored effects. Dres is both striking and functional, perfect for standout headlines, posters and packaging.

Originally published by OurType, Dan Milne’s Tasman has found a new home at Retype. Milne first conceived Tasman as a typeface for newspapers. This influenced the proportions and look of the face considerably: the goal was to keep the personality as warm and playful as possible without losing the credible tone required to deliver all kinds of news. A sturdy, warm type family that is neither mechanical nor fragile. It borrows its name from Abel Janszoon Tasman (1603–1659), a Dutch seafarer, explorer, and merchant who mapped parts of Australia in 1642, including Van Diemen’s Land (now known as Tasmania). Tasman’s primary purpose is an unbiased presentation of information; it strives for neutrality over elegance. Its characters are sturdy and unambiguous, sporting strong serifs, punctuation, and diacritics, as well as generously sized small caps and hybrid figures. Rationalized letterforms give the face enough robustness to withstand the stress of screen applications and laser printing. The figures’ three-quarter x-height makes them considerably larger than traditional oldstyle numerals, yet they still integrate with the lowercase much better than lining figures do. Although initially intended for newspapers, Tasman’s somewhat corporate, objective appearance also makes it an excellent candidate for digital and print magazines, websites, annual reports, and corporate identities. Tasman is a suite of feature-rich OpenType fonts fully equipped to tackle complex, professional typography. The character set includes small caps, fractions, case-sensitive forms, bullets, arrows, special quotes, and nine sets of numerals. Besides standard Latin, its extensive character set supports Central European, Baltic, and Turkish languages.

Download Astrup Font Family From Indian Type Foundry

Astrup is a rationalist sans serif typeface. Its letterforms feel like the France of the 1950s; they are very orderly, but also a bit spritely. The letters’ apertures are very small, making the counterforms in typeface feel like they are being completely enclosed within their surrounding characters. The Astrup family has six weights that range from Extralight to Bold. The lowercase letters’ ascenders rise up to the exact height of the tops of the capital letters. Each font has two versions for each numeral; the standard numerals are slightly smaller than that capital letters. The other numerals are substituted into all-caps text by the fonts’ case-sensitive OpenType feature. These alternate numerals are the same size as the capital letters. Astrup’s fonts also have a full range of superior and inferior numerals for the better setting of fractions. Many of Astrup’s capital letters seem very geometric. For example, the ‘G’ does not have a spur at its bottom-right, and the tail of the ‘Q’ is a simple, vertical stroke. The lowercase ‘a’ in the Astrup fonts is double-storey, while the ‘g’ is single-storey. The ‘f’ and ’t’ are very wide. The dots on the ‘i’ and ‘j’ – as well as the fonts’ dot-based punctuation and diacritical marks – are circular. Astrup is an excellent selection for use in branding, or in other kinds of corporate identity design. It may also be put to good use in editorial designs for publications about contemporary lifestyle issues. Astrup is the work of Frode Helland, a type designer from Norway.

Matteo is a family of geometric sans serif fonts. Designer Diana Ovezea has given the family an Italian name so that users might call fast cars to mind when they see it. The family includes 14 styles; there are seven weights, ranging from Thin to Bold. Each of these includes a companion italic. Matteo’s italics have an extreme angle (15º), which is quite unusual for a sans serif design. These italics are oblique in form, with a single-storey ‘a’ in place of the upright’s double-storey ‘a’. Matteo is an excellent selection for use in editorial and corporate identity designs, as well as advertising or annual reports. The shapes of its letterforms, as well as their spacing, have been optimized to create a pleasant reading experience, even in longer texts. The most prominent feature of the typeface is its geometric construction, which is based on circles and ovals. Letterforms in all seven of the weights are based on the same skeleton, with the ‘O’ maintaining its circular proportions (this makes Matteo’s lighter weights feel wider than its heavier ones). Several of Matteo’s letterforms include sharp corners, e.g., the ‘A’, ‘N’, ‘M’, ‘V’, ‘W’, and ‘Z’, as well as in the numerals ‘2’, ‘3’, and ‘7’. The capital ‘T’, ‘E’, ‘F’, and ‘Z’ each feature slightly angled endings on their horizontal strokes. Three special characters are particularly noteworthy in terms of their design: ¶, ≠, and &. Each font includes four sets of numerals, as well as a full range of subscript and superscript figures for typesetting factions. The period, comma, colon, and semicolon have the same width in each of the family’s 14 fonts; this allows users to set tables more easily. The fonts are also ‘logo-ready’, with extensive kerning having been defined even between the lowercase and uppercase letters. This enables the easy typesetting of CamelCase terms, like ‘SonVender’, ‘eTones’, ‘MunYan’, etc., without any ugly gaps appearing between lowercase and uppercase letters.

Passenger Serif is a Clarendon-style font family designed for use in long passages of text intended for immersive reading. It takes the idea of mid-nineteenth century English Clarendon types – like vertical axes of stress, lots of ball terminals, and chunky bracketed-serifs – and channels them into a face that is very legible in small sizes. It is comfortable to read, too. Passenger Serif is ready for use in editorial design, and for body text in novels and other books, too. The family includes seven weights, ranging in style from Extralight through Extrabold. Each weight has both an upright font and an italic on offer. The fonts’ default numerals are proportionally-spaced lining figures. Via the OpenType features, there are also oldstyle figures and tabular figures available, as well as a full range of numerators and denominators for typesetting fractions. The ascenders of the lowercase letters rise up above the tops of the capitals. In the upright fonts, the ‘a’ and the ‘g’ are double-storied. In the italics, they are single-storied. Each font includes 13 f-ligatures. Passenger Serif has a companion typeface available for larger-sized applications: Passenger Serif Display. Passenger Serif and Passenger Serif Display can be used together to powerful effect in magazine layouts, or in exhibition design graphics. The Passenger Serif families were designed by Diana Ovezea and Samo Ačko.

Semi-serif? Semi-sans? Emerging from the hazy border that divides Sans from Serif, Integra aims to integrate both styles in a cool, elegant, contemporary fashion. With its sleek anatomy, flared terminals and almost non-existent straight lines, Integra was inspired by the stressed, modulated, unserifed letterforms incised in the early 15th-century ledger tombs at Santa Croce church in Florence, and the neoclassical grotto inscriptions at Stourhead in England that dates from the mid 18th-century. Integra, however, gives a contemporary, even futuristic twist to these references by featuring original, audacious shapes on key letters like L, E and X; as well as with the modern, generous proportions of its lowercase; infusing it all with a flowing, luminous, Latin American feel. Integra comes in several weights and italic styles, for text composition and display usage. Its rounded counterforms and arch-like shapes lend texts a spacious, neat, architectural quality, perfect for sophisticated content.

Download Mexica Font Family From Sudtipos

Mexica is a typographic tribute to Nahuatl, the tongue of the Aztecs, but also the lingua franca of ancient Mexico. ‘Mexica’ is not only the feminized, latinized form of the word ‘Mexico’, but also the name of the inhabitants of this place: the Me-xic-cah. Nahuatl, when composed in the Latin alphabet, abounds in diagonal letter shapes: XYZ are ubiquitous in its classic orthography, just as KW are in its modern one. This visual feature is further enhanced by the absence of some rounded letters such as BDG that depict inexistent sounds in this millenarian tongue. Besides, Nahuatl is language with a tendency to form very long words that give the text quite a distinct appearance, unlike English, for instance, with its abundance of short words. Mexica was designed to look well in all these contexts, and to perform as well as a contemporary, daring, stylish serif type family, with several weights for text and display composition. Further, its terminals and general structure —devoid almost completely of straight lines—are inspired by the angled architecture and ornamentation of the ancient city of Mexico- Tenochtitlan. Mexica received an Award of Excellence at the Type Directors Club of New York annual competition.

Adso was born out of a research that studied the possibility of reintroducing Gothic writing in our contemporary world. Inspired by Textura, Adso was decidedly freed of all those little details that make Blackletter faces appear foreign or even displeasing to the contemporary reader’s eyes. Nevertheless, the basic features of Gothic color were preserved: verticality, modularity, and darkness. Adso is a gothic font for today’s age, highly readable and open to all fields of expression.

Download Mena Grotesk Font Family From Compañía Tipográfica de Chile

In the neighbourhood of  Bajos de Mena (Puente Alto, Chile) there are many stores and shops with signs and printed posters using typefaces such as Arial or Helvetica. These typefaces are used for all different purposes, from 8 pts to gigantics sizes, because local people would work with what they have within reach, also in terms of fonts. «What is Helvetica doing here?» that is the question that led me to design Mena Grotesk, a sans serif typeface for Bajos de Mena. Mena Grotesk is a Neo-grotesk typography made in the Chilean way. Gifted with a more humanist proportion, with sharper inner curves and softer outer curves, Mena Grotesk counts with the character to stand out in big sizes and enough control to not distract the reader: it is a typeface to be seen and to be read. Mena Grotesk is a full time worker font, a “handyman”, as my people. Mena Grotesk is composed by 20 styles, 886 glyphs and Small Caps. Besides, it has powerful OpenType features for each style, including stylistic sets, borders and patterns, extended language support, ligatures, contextual alternates, lining figures, oldstyle figures, arrows, circled and black circled numbers, fractions, superscripts, subscripts and many more.

Alejandro Freitez’s first commercial typeface is inspired by contemporary serifs and newspaper typography. Calicanto is a compact typeface with strong serifs, symmetrical curves and a vertical axis. It has open counters and a generous x-height with slightly condensed characters and low contrast strokes. The design of its letters are simple (with a precise rationale), and it is ideal for combining different variables and typographic bodies, for digital and printed media. Each of the 12 variables has 750 glyphs (supporting more than 90 languages), with small caps, ligatures, lining figures by default, OldStyle and tabular, mathematical and currency symbols for each set of numerals, intelligent fractions, lower and upper numerals, glyphs sensitive to capital letters and circular numerals, among other OpenType functions that make it ideal for composing demanding texts for books, magazines, newspapers, annual reports, and much more.
